Encrypted?

I may not be an important person but I like my privacy. I don't want my personal conversations with friends snooped on. How easy is it to decipher Instant Messages? Painfully easy as illustrated by the message (ie. "IM conversations are in plaintext") I sent out. OTR is the solution.
