What does it take to be #1?*

Fenn was asking me to explain how a team gets crowned NBA champion the other nite. I decided to replay that explanation here. The NBA is divided into the Western and Eastern conferences with a total of 30 teams. Each team plays a grand total of 82 games a season resulting in teams actually playing certain teams more than twice a season. After an exhausting 82 game season, nobody is crowned champion just yet!!!
The top 8 teams of each conference qualifies for the NBA Playoffs with the top 4 seeds of each conference getting home advantage in the first round. Subsequently, the higher seed gets home advantage as they progress through each round (which are all best-of-seven rounds). Finally, the best of the West and East meet in the NBA Finals to be crowned "World Champion". Trust the Americans to label themselves "World Champions".
Unlike the EPL where you have to play at least 5 league games to qualify for a Championship medal... once crowned "World Champion", each member of the team automatically qualifies for a ring even if he did not play a single game throughout the entire playoffs... I kid you not.
FYI... I'm a Lakers fan and have been since the 80s when I used to watch Magic Johnson, Kareem, Worthy and co.

* Lyric from chorus of Nelly's song "#1".
